DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Dan Coursey, first elected in 1982, has decided not to seek a 10th term, his office announced this week.
His 36-year tenure, which will end Dec. 31, makes him the longest-serving superior court judge in the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit.
He presided over numerous high-profile cases, including government corruption in DeKalb. He’s also served as president of the Council of Superior Court Judges of Georgia, chair of the Judicial Section of the Atlanta Bar Association, DeKalb’s chief superior court judge, in addition to various other roles.

“Judge Coursey would like to thank the people of DeKalb County for allowing him to be one of their superior court judges for the majority of his adult life,” the news release said. “He has enjoyed meeting the thousands who have given their time to serve as jurors in his courtroom.”
The judge, known for memorizing each juror’s name, plans to spend more time with his wife Heidi and dog Max, the release said.
