About 475 animals in Fulton and DeKalb counties found new homes during a special adoption period over Black Friday weekend, a record number of adoptions.

LifeLine Animal Project, which manages animal services for both counties, offered free adoptions from Black Friday through Monday, Dec. 2. LifeLine announced Thursday that 288 dogs, 182 cats and two guinea pigs found new homes during the promotional period.

The organization has offered a Black Friday adoption special for the last five years, but this weekend set a record for the number of pets adopted.

“Employees here were overjoyed to see so many pets get adopted, and there was hardly a dry eye in the shelter by the close of Cyber Monday. We cannot thank everyone enough for their support and hope it continues throughout December,”  DeKalb County Animal Services Director Kerry Moyers-Horten said in a statement.

With fees waived for the spay/neutering, microchipping and vaccines, the free adoptions were estimated to be equal to a $300 value.

Overcrowding has been a problem at the public shelters for years; officials estimate 40 to 60 animals arrive at the shelters every day. LifeLine said families are still able to adopt pets, and can visit their website to see animals that are up for adoptions.
