Drivers in Brookhaven with electric cars are in luck.

Crews are in the process of installing more electric car “smart-charger” stations around the DeKalb County city.

The seven chargers, which cost the city $122,986, can each charge two vehicles. They’ll be installed at public places around Brookhaven: City Hall, Lynnwood Park, Blackburn Tennis Center, Blackburn Park, Ashford Park and Skyland Park. The first round of installations is scheduled to be done by the end of June.

Brookhaven already has charging stations at City Hall and the recently renovated Skyland Park.

“We are always looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment or improve our air quality, not only for today but for future generations,” Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst said in a statement. “Brookhaven is helping lead the way in creating viable environmental alternatives for our ongoing sustainability initiative.”

The Brookhaven Police Department recently used confiscated funds to buy the electric Tesla Model S for $45,000. The city said it spoke to their goals of environmental sustainability, but that the Tesla would have to go through testing to determine whether it could serve as a patrol car.

Electric car chargers will be included in future designs for parks and city parking lots, Brookhaven said. Irrigation systems and solar panels are also being added to the city’s parks.
