A popular recreation center in DeKalb County is closed while officials conduct renovations and repairs to the aging structure.

The city of Stonecrest recently purchased eight parks from DeKalb County, with plans to manage them moving forward. That includes the Browns Mill Recreation Center, where the county has hosted a summer camp for children every summer.

Stonecrest has temporarily closed Browns Mill while crews add a new heat and air conditioning unit, upgrade the plumbing a sewer system, repair roof leaks and fix two non-working water fountains, the city said in a statement. It plans to reopen the recreation center on Monday, Aug. 12.

In the meantime, the Browns Mill after-school program was moved to the South DeKalb YMCA.

Meanwhile, Stonecrest plans to make repairs at other parks around the city. Salem and Gregory Mosley parks, officials said, currently have “unsafe playground equipment.”

“Over the years, the county has modified the playground equipment beyond the manufacturer’s design,” Sean DePalma, the city’s parks and recreation director, said in a statement. “Therefore, it is in the city’s best interest to remove the equipment for safety and liability reasons.”
