Local and federal authorities were investigating Sunday a fire at a vacant DeKalb County church.

DeKalb County fire spokesman Capt. Eric Jackson said crews were dispatched to 1032 Hillcrest Drive late Sunday afternoon and found the building — a church that had been abandoned “for quite a while” — fully ablaze. The fire caused heavy damage, Jackson said.

Jackson said members of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called to the scene to help with the investigation, which is his department’s standard procedure for any fire involving a church.

As of early Sunday evening, no possible cause had been determined.

No injuries were reported.
