Portion of Nickajack Road to be closed Saturday

One lane of a portion of Nickajack Road will be closed for Mableton 5K runners at 8 a.m. Saturday.

With registration from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., the race will begin and end at the Mable House Complex, 5239 Floyd Road, Mableton through residential neighborhoods.

Also, a 1-mile Mableton Jr. Fun Run will begin at 9 a.m. as a part of the 9th annual Mableton Day Community Celebration.

Cobb schools to hold forum on budget

The Cobb County Schools District’s Board of Education and superintendent will hold a public forum on the tentative $899 million budget starting 7 p.m. today at school headquarters, 514 Glover St., Marietta. The proposed budget for 2015 will add about 300 teachers, salary increases and no furlough days.

Powder Springs pool will open May 22

The Powder Springs Park pool will open May 22 at 3899 Brownsville Road for its final year.

Hours will be 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.

Next year this pool will be closed and filled in, but Cobb County will open a new pool next summer at Wild Horse Creek Park, 3820 Macedonia Road, Powder Springs with a new bath house and the pool with a lazy river, two slides and more water features.

Marietta Greek festival set this weekend

Marietta seeking WWII veterans for parade

Marietta and the Georgia Military Vehicle Preservation Association are looking for World War II veterans to participate in the city’s Let Freedom Ring parade July 4.

A military vehicle will be provided for vets to ride in along the 1.5 mile parade route.

Hudgens joins Bromolow stream cleanup

The Hudgens Center for the Arts will join Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful, Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources and other volunteers to cleanup the shores of Bromolow Creek 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 4300 Satellite Blvd., Duluth. Objects collected at the Art in Motion - Great Gwinnett Stream Cleanup event will be inventoried and repurposed for inclusion in future art projects. Suwanee event salutes veterans

Suwanee will host a Memorial Day weekend concert featuring patriotic and big band sounds at 7:30 p.m. May 23 at the Town Center stage. The Gwinnett County Public Library, in partnership with Norcross High School, will host the first “MakerCamp” to introduce Gwinnett students to practical, hands on learning through the use of computer-aided design software and a MakerBot 3D printer June 9 through June 12 at the Peachtree Corners Branch, 5570 Spalding Drive.

Forsyth seeks gas station robbery suspect

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office officials are seeking an armed robbery suspect. Deputies say a white male entered the Chevron Station at Matt and Dahlonega highways Tuesday night, demanded money from the clerk and fled south on foot. He’s described as a white male between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-10, with some facial hair on his chin and “old bad” tattoos on his arms. Open house on Ga. 9 widening project

An open house to get feedback on proposed road work on Alpharetta Highway in Milton is 5 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 13000 Deerfield Parkway.

Woodstock approves road, parking lot repairs

Woodstock City Council Monday night approved a $278,196 contract with Wildcat Striping and Sealing Company of Decatur for projects, including overlay work on Ga. 5 from the downtown railroad tracks to the roundabout at Haney Road. Furkids opens Alpharetta shelter

Furkids, a nonprofit animal rescue organization, has opened a new shelter at 1520 Union Hill Road, Alpharetta. The 4,900-square-foot shelter houses about 40 rescued dogs that are available for adoption. The organization cares for more than 600 animals in metro Atlanta.

Nighttime bicycle tour through city for a cause

The Atlanta Moon Ride, a 6.5-mile nighttime bicycle ride through local neighborhoods for enthusiasts of all skill levels and ages, will take place at 10 p.m. June 13 starting from Park Tavern, 500 10th St. NE.

Cost: $25, $30 after midnight May 23. On-site rentals: $25.

Proceeds from the ride will benefit Bert’s Big Adventure, a local charity that provides trips to Walt Disney World for children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families.

City announces ‘streetcar race’ in June

To promote the opening of the Atlanta Streetcar, city officials, Central Atlanta Progress, the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District and Siemens are hosting a “Run the Rails 5K” in June along the streetcar’s downtown tracks.

Annual report available for DeKalb Sheriff

The 2013 annual report for the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office is now available online and at the office lobby.

The report covers the work by former Sheriff Tom Brown, who resigned in February after four terms in office. Sheriff Jeffrey Mann was sworn into office March 1 and is now running against seven others to fill Brown’s unexpired term.

The report includes activity at the county jail that houses more than 3,000 inmates daily.

‘Smart Meters’ ready for installation

Decatur’s new parking meters, or “smart meters,” have arrived, with installation scheduled for early June, after the city’s Memorial Day arts festival.

A total 35 multi-space pay kiosks and another 48 single-head meters – used in blocks of low-volume parking – will cover Decatur’s 315 on-street downtown parking spaces.

All meters take debit, credit and coins (no bills) and eventually residents can purchase a reloadable smart card, like a MARTA breeze card.

Animal shelter offers reduced adoption fees

DeKalb County Animal Services is offering special adoption rates during May.

Adoption fees for dogs six months and older are $20, and $10 for cats. All animals will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

Clayton boy shot by BB gun at school field day

Outdoor activities have been suspended at a Clayton County’s Callaway Elementary after a student was shot with a BB gun Tuesday afternoon. The boy was playing during field day when he was hit in the head by a BB gun projectile,

He was taken to a nearby hospital with a non-life threatening injury, authorities said. Clayton County Schools officials said the shot was fired from somewhere off campus.

Man killed in Lovejoy neighborhood

Lovejoy police are investigating the shooting death of a man found in the yard of a neighboring subdivision Tuesday night.

Lovejoy police Lt. M. Geddis said they were called to Ashefield Lane about 10:30 by a resident who said he heard a loud noise, possibly a gunshot outside his home. When police arrived they found a man later identified as Mark Daniels, 41, on the ground with a gunshot wound.

Peachtree City event to cause traffic delays

The Peachtree International Triathlon and SuperSprint event will cause traffic delays from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday in the vicinity of Lake McIntosh in Peachtree City. The route includes Dividend Drive, McIntosh Trail, Robinson Road, Spear Road and Paschal Road. Extra police officers will be on hand to guide traffic, but motorists are urged to avoid the area. May is Foster Care Month in Fayette

The Fayette County Board of Commissioners has designated May as Foster Care Month. The proclamation notes that more than 14,000 Georgia children need such care, and more families in Fayette are needed to open their homes to displaced kids.
