Colleges announce the graduation speakers

First lady Michelle Obama will serve as the commencement speaker at Spelman College on May 15.

Whoopi Goldberg will address graduates from the Savannah College of Art and Design June 4.

Gov. Nathan Deal delivers commencement at Georgia Gwinnett College on June 2. About 100 students will graduate, including the first students to attend the new college for all four years. The ceremony will be held on campus in Lawrenceville.

Dr. Subra Suresh, director of the National Science Foundation, will address doctorate recipients at Georgia Tech on May 6.

Michael Duke, president and CEO of Wal-Mart, will give the keynote address for the bachelor's and master's ceremony at Georgia Tech. The ceremony is May 8 at the Georgia Dome.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed will be among the speakers May 7 at Oglethorpe University and will deliver the commencement address to graduates of Kennesaw State University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences on May 11.

U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) will serve as the commencement speaker for the May 7 evening ceremony at the University of West Georgia.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will speak at Emory University. The ceremony will be held on May 9 in the university quadrangle.

At the University of Georgia, Ray Mabus, the U.S. Secretary of the Navy, will deliver the keynote address for undergraduates on May 13.

Karen A. Holbrook, a senior vice president at the University of South Florida, will deliver the keynote address for University of Georgia's graduate ceremony on May 13 on campus.

At Agnes Scott College, Melanne Verveer, first U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues will deliver the keynote address. The ceremony is May 14 on the Decatur campus.

Susan Taylor, editor-in-chief emeritus of Essence magazine and founder of the National CARES Mentoring Movement, will deliver Clark Atlanta University's 2011 commencement address on Monday, May 16.

House Speaker David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge, will serve as the commencement speaker for the May 7 morning ceremony at the University of West Georgia.

Veteran journalist Gwen Ifill, known for her work on "PBS NewsHour," will serve as commencement speaker at Morehouse College, along with Charles Ogletree, a professor at Harvard Law School and founder of the school's institute for race and justice. Both speakers will also receive honorary degrees.

Dr. Reed Tuckson, fellow of the American College of Physicians, will deliver the commencement address to graduates of the Morehouse School of Medicine on May 21.

Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens will address graduates of Chattahoochee Technical College June 16 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

State Rep. Katie Dempsey, R-Rome, will address the graduating class at Berry College on May 7.
