Cobb to wait on Acworth project

Cobb commissioners have decided to wait on awarding another contract for the flushing of Acworth water mains to keep from doubling costs to Cobb. The reason is that Acworth city officials decided against resurfacing of the city’s impacted streets to coincide with the county’s periodic flushing to improve water quality in the cast iron water mains. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners has rescinded the previously approved construction contract with Ray Campbell Contracting Co. Inc. for the Clarkdale Drive Area Water Main Replacement in Acworth.

Their reason on Dec. 11 was to keep from nearly doubling costs to Cobb because of the resulting roadway restoration efforts by Campbell that had been awarded the $280,690 contract by the Cobb commissioners in October.

The reason for the extra cost was that Acworth city officials decided against resurfacing of the city’s impacted streets, according to Cobb Water System Agency Director Steve McCullers.

Instead McCullers is recommending the project’s delay until the road improvements project is rescheduled by Acworth city officials and work for the two projects can be coordinated.

Other temporary means of improvement will be sought to relieve the need for periodic flushing to improve water quality in the cast iron water mains, McCullers added.
