The Cobb County Department of Transportation (CCDOT) is using a new online story map - titled “Smooth Operations: Resurfacing at CCDOT” - to prioritize roads for resurfacing

Cobb’s pavement maintenance program can be seen at http://bit.ly/ccdotSmoothOps, according to a county statement.

At CCDOT, the challenges of variables in traffic, weather and time are met with a comprehensive resurfacing plan that assesses and rates pavement conditions and establishes roadwork priorities.

The process facilitates the departmental and public need to systematically repair roads of poor quality.

This year, CCDOT expects to resurface 128 roads.

CCDOT maintains more than 9,125 roads in Cobb.

Greater than 95 percent of the roads are local, and the remainder are thoroughfares.

That totals 2,426 miles of roadway that all will require resurfacing.

Each year, 43 percent of thoroughfares and 38 percent of local roads in Cobb need resurfacing.

However, the costs per mile to resurface a thoroughfare or local road are nearly $500,000 and $250,000, respectively.

Due to limited budgets, only 11 percent of thoroughfares and just 3 percent of local roads are resurfaced each year.

These factors require CCDOT to use a detailed process to identify and repair the roads most in need each year, the statement added.
