Clayton County Schools Superintendent Morcease Beasley says Georgians should make up their own minds about how to respond to news the state plans to allow businesses to reopen as early as Friday.
In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Beasley said residents have the power to decide what is safe and how to proceed in a climate where the coronavirus has not been eliminated.
"Time reveals ALL things. We hope for the best outcomes," he wrote. "However, individuals are encouraged to look at the data and to make decisions to protect your safety."
In another tweet about a national effort to pull back on restrictions brought on by the coronavirus, he said, “Remember this...Just because they reopen, you have the right not to participate if in your best interest and safety. This is a decision FREE people can make.”
Gov. Brian Kemp on Monday announced he would allow some businesses that had been closed because of COVID-19, such as gyms, nail shops and tattoo parlors, to reopen by Friday if they meet certain guidelines, including social distancing.
Other states in the southeast, including nearby South Carolina, are making similar choices, despite continued growth in coronavirus cases and deaths.
Beasley started posting thoughts along with local and national stories about the decisions to open early Tuesday morning.
Spokespeople for the district said Beasley was not taking a "political stance, he is trying to be informative."
Other tweets throughout the day focused on small business loans and President Trump’s comments Monday that he would stop all immigration to the nation.
“Halting Immigration; Reopening Businesses in pandemic, Lack of PPE for first responders, Death everywhere-- Leadership matters. Who you VOTE for matters. Critical Thinking matters. Don’t give up hope,” Beasley wrote.
