Clayton Schools will lay out plans next week to get laptops in the hands of all students for the 2020-2021 academic year, the district said.

The school system will ask the Clayton Board of Education to support giving devices to all students in grades 3  through 12 as part of the district’s Learning Beyond the Classroom Initiative.

The plan also will include daily use of laptops for students in kindergarten through 2nd grade over planned digital learning days in the new school year, the district said.

"We are committed to making sure all students have access to digital learning opportunities," Superintendent Morcease Beasley said in a statement. "In light of the coronavirus pandemic and unknown impacts of on-going seasonal weather conditions, it is paramount for our school district to remedy the need of placing devices into the hands of every student enrolled in our school system to support them beyond the classroom."

The district did not say how much the device outreach would cost taxpayers.

Clayton has been buying Chromebooks over time for students through funds provided by E-SPLOST collections, but has not yet procured enough for every pupil.
