A 22-year veteran of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office has been named the new school police chief for the Cherokee County School District.

The school board unanimously approved having Major Buster Cushing head the school police department starting July 1. Cushing will succeed retiring Chief Mark Kissel, who has led the department since its establishment 20 years ago.

Cushing is currently commander of field operations for the Sheriff’s Office. He also has served as commander of criminal investigations, lieutenant of internal affairs, narcotics agent supervisor, SWAT Team leader, crime suppression team leader and uniform patrol shift commander.

He has a bachelor’s in criminal justice from the University of Georgia and a master’s in public administration from Columbus State College.

School Superintendent Brian V. Hightower said Cushing’s “experience, education, reputation and commitment to our community will serve our school district and community well as he takes on this incredibly important role in our organization.”
