The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved “exceptional variances” for the construction of a Lidl food store near Woodstock.

Lidl US LLC sought the variances for its store proposed for the southwest corner of Bells Ferry Road and Eagle Drive, citing the topography of the 3.17-acre site and the desire to avoid expensive earthmoving. A 29,136-square-foot store with 128 parking spaces is proposed.

Lidl requested permission to build the store outside the required maximum building setback, allow parking between the building and roads, allow a second building-mounted sign as the property has two road frontages, and reduce the number of trees required for better visibility of the store from Bells Ferry.

A Germany-based discount grocer recently arrived in the metro Atlanta market, Lidl plans stores across the region and a $100 million, regional headquarters and distribution center in Cartersville.
