The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has advanced the Bells Ferry Road widening project by approving an agreement governing land acquisitions with the Georgia Department of Transportation

About 1.6 miles of Bells Ferry will be widened from two lanes to four from Victory Drive to North Victoria Road near Woodstock.

“In order to be eligible for GDOT funding, all phases of the project must be completed in accordance with GDOT right-of-way acquisition guidelines,” staff said in a report to commissioners. The agreement approved by commissioners “spells out the requirements that the county will be required to follow.”

GDOT will pay engineering and construction costs – $3 million and $38 million, respectively – and the county will acquire about 140 parcels at an estimated cost of $16 million, County Manager Jerry Cooper told commissioners.

Commission Chairman Harry Johnston said, “This is a biggie, $16 million, but it’s a much-needed improvement for that road, and we’re thankful we’re not having to pay it all.”
