The city of Chamblee on Tuesday announced the retirement of Police Chief Donny Williams, effective July 1.

Williams started on the force in 1991, when drugs drove crime in the city, and became Chamblee’s first training officer a few years later. He became chief in 2014.

“I feel we have accomplished great things at the police department during the last 27 years,” Williams said in a news release. “I was lucky enough to be mentored along the way by longtime devoted city employees.”

Williams recalled myriad changes in his years at Chamblee Police: the size of the department, which now has 67 officers; the use of technology; and an increase in training.

“I am very proud to have worked with exceptional staff who made me look good,” he said.

It isn’t yet clear who will take over as chief.
