Boy Killed at Six Flags Over Georgia

Batman The Ride reopened to the public at Six Flags Over Georgia on Wednesday (July 2) after the State Labor Commissioner gave the go-ahead for the operation.

"It wasn't Six Flags' fault," said Isaac Abernathy, 20, of Adairsvile. He was among the first riders.

Out-of-state visitors had no apprehension about getting on the ride. "I wasn't really worried," said Katie St. Germaine, 14, of Michigan.

Park officials are not sure why the boy went into the restricted area that they said was marked with signs.

Wrought iron fencing outside the popular "Batman the Ride" offers warnings to approximately every 20 feet.

In 2002, a Six Flags foreman walked into the locked, no-access area on "Batman, The Ride" and was killed when he was struck by a riders' dangling legs.

The Batman roller coaster opened in 1997 and features a top speed of 50 mph, two loops, two corkscrews and a heartline spin, according to the Six Flags web site.

The roller coaster's height is nearly 11-stories tall.
