The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has obtained secret photographs (OK, a public relations company sent them to us when we asked) showing the current construction work going on inside Marietta’s beloved Big Chicken.

The demolition is complete and crews are working on constructing the restaurant’s new frame, said Michelle Doebele, spokeswoman with KBP Foods, owner of the iconic roadside KFC and about 60 other less-awesome-and-historic KFCs in metro Atlanta.

The company announced just before the last week of January that the restaurant and Instagram fodder would close to undergo a 12-week remodel.

The company said it wasn’t removing the 56-foot-tall chicken sign. The photos show the chicken is being touched up a bit, as the letters have been removed.

Doebele said they company is looking for a re-opening date sometime in either the middle or end of April.

Like the other stores, it has been stripped down to its bare bones and done-up anew with weathered wood walls and brick and steel beams in the lobby to accompany new tiling. There’ll also be a new patio and separate screened-in porch.

And let’s not forget the new sign reading “The BIG Chicken” in case you didn’t know what was up at 12 Cobb Parkway.

Johnny Reb's Chick, Chuck and Shake owner Tubby Davis had the Big Chicken erected in 1963, Storms nearly destroyed it in the early 90's after it had become a KFC, but public outcry led to it's refurbishment. BOB ANDRES / BANDRES@AJC.COM

They're treating it like roadside royalty with a wall of Big Chicken history.

“We can't wait for Marietta residents to see the new and improved Big Chicken,” Doebele said.
