Atlanta's demolished projects

Demolition/rebirth of Atlanta housing projects

Atlanta Housing Authority officials in June, 2009, began demolishing the last of the city's large public housing developments. The destruction is part of a city plan to get rid of what officials say have become crime-infested public housing developments. Last year, Mario Evans, 23, wore a shirt for his friend who was killed in the Bowen Homes community.

Techwood Homes, the first such public housing development in the country, became a notorious Atlanta symbol of poverty and crime.

Centennial Place now sits where Techwood Homes once stood.

In 1997, longtime resident Mary Sanford looks at shuttered Perry Homes.

The West Highlands development replaced Perry Homes. The city is on course to become, in 2010, the first to have eliminated all of its large public housing projects.

East Lake Meadows shortly before demolition began.

In 1998, East Lake Meadows had turned into a mixed-income townhouse community. Some of the older units are in the background.

The McDaniel Glenn public housing complex has been demolished for a new community.

Harris Homes in the 1990s is being replaced by College Town at West End.

John Hope Homes in southwest Atlanta, was demolished in 1996. Built in 1940, the long-vacant complex was developed into a 490-unit, mixed-income community as part of the Atlanta Housing Authority's Olympic Legacy program.

Gloria Patterson lived in Grady Homes for 37 years.

In 1998, Renee Lewis Glover, executive director of the Atlanta Housing Authority, talked to 35-year resident Clarence Price of Carver Homes, which is no longer in existence.

Trash overflows a dumpster in the Jonesboro South public housing community.

The Hollywood Courts public housing community is being demolished.

The city's housing authority once ran the Englewood Manor public housing project. The Beltline project is supposed to revitalize the area.

Residents are being relocated from Herndon Homes neighborhood along Kennedy Street.
