District 10 Council member Andrea L. Boone will honor SisterLove and the organization’s founder, Dazon Dixon Diallo, during an event 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 at City Hall, according to a press release.
The organization’s mission is to eradicate the adverse impact of HIV/AIDS and other reproductive health challenges, as well as the oppression of women, their families and their communities. SisterLove is headquartered in Atlanta with a sister location in Johannesburg, South Africa.
“It’s a true pleasure to be able to honor SisterLove and all they do locally, nationally and internationally,” Boone said. “Their mission of providing help to people and promoting effective prevention and treatment practices is one that has an immeasurable positive impact in Atlanta and beyond.”
SisterLove was founded in July 1989 by a volunteer group of women interested in educating Atlanta, and especially communities of women, about HIV prevention, self-help and safer sex techniques.
More than 1.1 million Americans are living with HIV, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In 2017, 38,739 people were diagnosed with HIV. That same year, 37,155 Atlantans were living with HIV, according to the department.
