Next time you call an Uber or order Uber Eats in Atlanta, you could be working toward benefits such as flexible cancellations and free food delivery.

The rideshare app announced Wednesday a new rewards program for customers, following the release of a rewards program specifically for drivers a couple weeks ago.

Uber Rewards lets customers earn points toward benefits every time they use Uber or Uber Eats for business or personal use.

The program is being piloted in Atlanta, Miami, New Jersey, Denver, Tampa, New York, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and San Diego. Plans are for the rewards program to roll out to all American riders over the next few months, evolving as needed with feedback.

Here’s how it works.

There are four membership levels:

• Blue (499 points and under): Once you opt into the program, you'll get $5 added to your Uber Cash balance for every 500 points earned, regardless of your membership level. This balance can be spent on both rides and Uber Eats.

• Gold (500-2,499 points): Flexible cancellations, meaning you can cancel and rebook an eligible Uber trip within 15 minutes and have the cancellation fee refunded. Gold members also receive priority support with faster response times.

• Platinum (2,500 to 7,499 points): The above benefits, plus priority pickups to reduce wait times at most airports and price protection on a route, which lets you lock in lower prices between your two favorite places on UberX, even during traffic or busy times of day.

• Diamond (7,500 points and above): The above benefits, plus premium support (dedicated phone support with fast 24/7 response times from Uber's "most experienced customer support agents") and complimentary surprise upgrades from UberX to premium products, such as Uber Black. Diamond members also receive no delivery fee on three Uber Eats orders every six months and an "UberX Diamond" option in the app that allows access to highly-rated drivers

How to earn points:

• One point for every eligible dollar spent on UberPool and UberEats orders

• Two points for UberX, UberXL, Select and WAV

• Three points for Black and Black SUV.

Earnings periods, tied to the date you signed up to join the program, are six months long. When you unlock a tier, you have that tier for the remaining earnings period and next six months. Anyone can sign up to join the program at no cost.

Users will be able to sign up in the app through a section in the side menu that will start Wednesday afternoon, a spokeswoman said. Find more information about the program here.
