More than three months after a young mother was shot dead by a disguised assailant, Snellville police say they are “very close” to making an arrest.

Investigators think they know who killed 25-year-old Heather Strube, but they are waiting for the GBI to analyze evidence that could bolster their case, said Capt. Harold Thomas of the Snellville Police Department.

“I think we’re closer and closer,” said Thomas. “As soon as we get a break everybody is going to hear about this one. We’ve worked some long hours on this.”

Some of the evidence police sent to the GBI was gleaned from a truck belonging to Strube’s former mother-in-law. Police have said she is a person of interest, although they have declined to identify her.

Police said the mother-in-law drives a white pickup truck similar to one seen idling in the Target shopping center where Strube was killed. Witnesses told police a shooter wearing a wig and mustache disguise walked up and shot Strube. Surveillance footage from the store indicated that the shooter could have been a woman, police said.

Strube met her estranged husband, Steven Strube, in the parking lot that day to do a custody swap of their 2-year-old son. Investigators have said they don’t believe the husband was the shooter, but they have not ruled out the possibility he was involved.

Thomas said the killer is not going to go free.

“We believe there will be an arrest,” he said.
