And then there's The Tacky Prom

And then there's the Tacky Prom

It's the fifth annual Young Life Tacky prom dance, which was held Saturday, March 26, 2011. Students from Tucker and Lakeside high schools are invited to attend and are encouraged to dress in the tackiest outfits they could find.

"Tacky Prom is an extremely successful event we throw every year," said Troy Earnest, with Young Life East Atlanta. "In a world that asks kids to grow up so quick, Tacky Prom offers an opportunity for kids to be kids."

Each year kids tell us "The Tacky Prom is better than the Real Prom," said coordinator Troy Earnest. However, he notes that the Tacky Prom in no way replaces the traditional prom experience for most students. By wearing old tacky clothes, kids and leaders are able to cut loose and be themselves," said coordinator Troy Earnest. "An average night of Prom could cost hundreds, the Tacky Prom is free. Each year kids tell us "The Tacky Prom is better than the Real Prom!"

Students were told to "spend all of $5 at a Goodwill nearest you, get All Tackified with All Your Friends, and get ready to dance" in their invites to the prom.

Young Life is a Christian ministry that reaches out to middle school, high school and college-aged students.

Tacky Prom offers one more opportunity for kids to be kids before they venture too far out into the world of college, work and adult life.
