The Georgia Department of Drivers Services office in Sandy Springs is scheduled to close Sept. 16, and a new facility to replace it is to open about nine miles away Sept. 19 at 11575 Maxwell Road in Alpharetta, Fulton County officials announced.

As part of an agreement between the Fulton Board of Commissioners and the state, the new facility also will house a Fulton tag office, so residents can conduct DDS and vehicle registration business in one visit, officials said.

The Maxwell Road location will have free parking, seating for more than 100 people, and an increase in customer service counters to 21 from 17. It will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday.

The full-service facility will offer license and I.D. card issuance, renewal, reinstatement, knowledge tests and road tests. Road tests will be by appointment only. No behind-the-wheel skills tests will be administered during the new office’s first week of operation; they will resume Sept. 26.
