Dunwoody police are providing safety tips to residents after a spate of recent home and car break-ins.

Police Chief Billy Grogan and other department leaders met with members of the Dunwoody North Civic Association on Monday to discuss the recent crimes and how homeowners can stay vigilant.

According to a map provided by the police department, there have been several home burglaries, items stolen from cars and car thefts since May 1 near Dunwoody North, a subdivision on the southern side of the city.

There have been more reports of stolen cars and thefts from cars near Perimeter Mall and Perimeter Center, in Dunwoody’s southwestern corner. Overall since May 1, there have been about 40 reports of car broken into, six home burglaries and a dozen stolen cars, according to the map.

In front of a packed room Monday night, the police department offered the following tips, according to a Facebook post from the city:

  • Don't hesitate to call 911 if you see something suspicious. "You're not bothering the officers. They want to hear from you and check out anything that makes you feel uneasy," the city wrote.
  • If someone knocks on your door or rings your doorbell, make sure they know you're home by going to the door and acknowledging them. "Don't open the door, but don't ignore them. They might be looking for an empty home and easy target."
  • Get to know your neighbors and look out for them. "Be nosy," the city wrote. And remember that members of the police department are your "partners."
