German Castillo called 911 the evening of Feb. 1 to report a burglary at his southeast Atlanta home.
When responding officers arrived, they found the 42-year-old on the ground in his carport, suffering from stab wounds and blunt force trauma, according to an Atlanta police report.
Castillo was pronounced dead at the scene and police noted someone had taken off with his 2017 Toyota Corolla.
Exactly three weeks later, police arrested a 21-year-old man in Chattanooga, Tennessee and charged him in Castillo’s death, officials said. Jonathan Mansfield was extradited by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit and booked into jail on charges of murder, burglary and felony theft.

Police have not said what led to the attack or released a possible motive in the alleged murder. However, Atlanta police believe Castillo was targeted and the men knew each other.
According to arrest warrants obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, police believe Mansfield entered Castillo’s house on Hilburn Drive through the back door and stole “various electronic devices.” He allegedly stabbed Castillo multiple times, hit him in the head with a hard object and took off in his Corolla, worth over $15,000, according to the warrants.
Mansfield is being held at the DeKalb jail.
