Officials from Cobb County and the city of Acworth broke ground on Jan. 25 on the new Acworth Community Center. Expected to open in spring 2019, the new center will be beside Logan Farm Park, 4762 Logan Road.

This joint project between the county and the city will use voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds. The guaranteed maximum price is $9,857,317 with HCBeck Ltd. to provide construction management services.

The Acworth City Council also has approved an agreement for around $368,183 with Onepath Systems for low-voltage systems for the center. The 44,000-square-foot facility will feature a gymnasium with raised walking track, banquet hall, classroom, group exercise space and offices.

During the hour-long ceremony leading to the unveiling of the statue of Martin Luther King Jr. at the state Capitol on Monday, many speakers, including Gov. Nathan Deal, spoke of King's biography.
