Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech famously referenced Stone Mountain during his “let freedom ring” climax, and there are references to the civil rights leader within the park.

Sen. Emanuel Jones, chairman of the state's Martin Luther King Jr. Advisory Council, wants to take it a step further by erecting a monument to king at the top of the mountain. At his urging, the state Senate approved a resolution supporting the creation of a Liberty Bell monument that would celebrate King's words and place in history.

The next step for Jones is asking the Stone Mountain Memorial Association to sign off on the monument.
