New DeKalb homeowners reminded to seek exemptions

New DeKalb County homeowners who occupied their properties by Jan. 1 can file for homestead exemptions, potentially saving thousands of dollars of 2016 property taxes if they apply by April 1.

DeKalb Tax Commissioner Irvin Johnson said exemptions aren't automatically granted, and mortgage companies don't submit applications for property owners. There's no charge to file for exemptions.

The basic homestead exemption may be applied for by mail or online. Residents who are over 62 years old or disabled may qualify for additional property tax breaks.

Taxpayers may call 404-298-4000 for more information.
