The head of Fulton County’s government is calling for retailers there and throughout the state to limit gun sales to people who are at least 21 years old.
In a non-binding resolution to be heard Wednesday, County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts also calls for "the passage of reasonable legislation" in Georgia that would limit or prohibit the sale of high-capacity magazines and bump stocks, keep the mentally ill from buying guns and create a universal database of individuals who are prohibited from buying guns. The resolution also calls for federal or state law to limit or prohibit gun sales to those under 21.
“We have a real opportunity to reduce gun violence and prevent mass killings,” Pitts said in a statement. “This is a time for leaders in government and business to come together for action. Young people are watching and waiting.”
Retailers from Dick's Sporting Goods to L.L.Bean have announced their plans to limit gun sales after 17 people were killed in a school shooting in Parkland, Fla. last month. Pitts' resolution also expresses sympathy and condolences for the shooting victims and their families.
"I am calling on my fellow elected officials to join me in fighting back against the public threat of assault weapons," Pitts said. "Children are dying and we have done nothing to stop it."
