Gwinnett County Transit workers decided not to walk off the job this morning after the company that operates the service took additional steps to protect their safety.

Earlier this week, a union representative informed the company, Transdev, that employees planned to stop working today because of concerns for their safety during the coronavirus pandemic. But the representative, Mikesha Walker, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution this morning that Transdev had taken several steps to address their concerns.

Walker said the company has provided employees N95 face masks. It also has ordered clear shields to separate drivers from passengers and has agreed to hazard pay, though details are under negotiation. Walker said employees are working while those negotiations continue.

A Transdev representative confirmed there were no disruptions of service Thursday.

Employee safety has been a concern as transit agencies across the country continue to operate during the pandemic. Though Transdev reported earlier this week that no Gwinnett employees had tested positive for COVID-19, 26 MARTA employees have tested positive. Two workers – one at MARTA and the other at CobbLinc – have died from the disease.
