Cobb commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution Tuesday opposing two bills in the state legislature that seek to limit local control over residential home design.

The bills, HB302 and SB172, would prohibit the county from dictating exterior color, material and architectural style for one and two-family homes. It would not apply to homeowner association restrictions.

Commissioner Bob Ott called the proposals a “smack in the face” to local officials.

“Every commissioner up here spends a lot of time and effort working with the community and developers,” Ott said.

Commissioners JoAnn Birrell and Lisa Cupid expressed similar concerns.

If passed, the bills would “take away our ability to make sure that all communities are protected,” said Cupid.

Cobb follows several other jurisdictions that have adopted similar resolutions, including Alpharetta and Dunwoody.
