The new Brookside Park in DeKalb County is being dedicated Saturday, with features including a playground, pavilion, walking trails and a community garden.

The 7-acre park, near the eastern edge of I-285, was previously an apartment complex that had become degraded by vandalism, litter and dumped tires.

DeKalb's government bought the property through park bond funds allocated to Commissioner Kathie Gannon's super district, according to the county. Federal funds paid for the installation of park equipment and amenities. In all, it cost $1.4 million to buy land, demolish structures and build new facilities at the park.

Additional features are planned for Brookside Park, including a dog park and basketball court.

Brookside Park is located at 3661 North Decatur Road outside the city of Decatur and near Memorial Drive.
