Deputy chief Erika Shields was named Atlanta’s 24th chief of police Dec. 1, 2016, replacing Chief George Turner, who is retiring. She will start the job on Dec. 28. Shields joined the Atlanta Police Department in 1995. Here's a look back at those who have headed the APD or served as leaders in Atlanta public safety departments in decades past.
