Georgia’s new governor wants to increase the budget for the state’s public colleges and universities.

Brian Kemp’s proposal would raise general spending for the University System of Georgia from more than $2.4 billion to nearly $2.6 billion, a six percent increase of about $147 million. General spending for the Technical College System of Georgia would rise from nearly $369 million to almost $373 million, a one percent increase.

The University System has more students and includes the state’s largest schools, such as the University of Georgia, Georgia State University and Georgia Tech.

University System and Technical College System officials discussed the budget proposals with state lawmakers Tuesday.

Kemp’s proposed budget would increase spending for major construction projects, such as a new campus in Carroll County for West Georgia Technical College and additional academic space and computer labs at Kennesaw State University.

Much of the additional money for the University System will go toward growth in enrollment, which is at a record high. Technical College System Commissioner Matt Arthur said the proposed increased would help give faculty raises.
