A nearly $40 million renovation and expansion of Grady High School has been approved.
The Atlanta school board this month awarded a $34.9 million construction management contract to Parrish Construction Group to complete the project. The total project will cost $39.5 million, including design, construction and other costs.

The work is slated to be complete by July 2021.
The high school, located near Piedmont Park, includes buildings that date back to the 1920s. It was last renovated between 2003 and 2005, and its cafeteria and media center are over-crowded during peak hours, according to district documents.

The construction project includes renovating and adding classrooms, gym renovations and renovations to the auditorium and performing arts areas, media center and cafeteria. The plan also includes security upgrades.
Preliminary renderings of the project, dated in May 24, 2019, and obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution through a public records request, show the scope of the project.

The project will be paid for using money from a one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or SPLOST, approved by voters in 2016.
