The Fulton County school board will retain its president as the board's leader for another two year-term, an era that will be marked by the search for a new superintendent.

The school board on Tuesday voted to give Linda Bryant another two years to serve as the board president. She was first elected to the school board in 1993 and her current school board term expires Dec. 31, 2020.

The school board also chose Julia Bernath to serve a one-year term as vice president. Board member Linda McCain had held that post previously.

Bryant said that “strong steady leadership” to guide Fulton County Schools is especially needed now as it searches for a new superintendent.

Former Superintendent Jeff Rose abruptly resigned citing personal reasons in November. The board had been set to discuss the renewal of his contract, which was to expire in October of 2019. The board then named an interim superintendent and hopes to have a permanent leader in place by the start of next school year.

Some parents who supported Rose and wanted him to remain as superintendent have expressed frustration with the school board and have said they don't feel members are listening to their concerns.

“The board is charged with selecting the district’s next superintendent and this is our highest priority. We will soon be asking our community for input through a survey and seeking feedback through other channels,” Bryant said, in a written statement.
