Wesleyan School of Peachtree Corners took team first place in division 6 – 8 CCGPS at the 2014 South Forsyth War Eagle Middle School Math Tournament. Two Wesleyan students, Andy Yang and Dylan Sullenberger, snagged individual first and second place, respectively. The Wesleyan School team consists of eighth-graders Dylan Sullenberger, Matthew Plunk, Carol Zhou, and seventh-graders Andy Yang and Adam Rogers.
• Julie Pinto, a mathematics teacher at Marietta High School, has received the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics. Leigh Colburn, MHS principal, said Pinto "is a role model to her colleagues, an inspiration to her students and our school community, and a leader in the improvement of math instruction." The award is given to one state educator per grade-level who "demonstrates strong content foundation in mathematics and shows evidence of growth" in the subject.
• Gwinnett County Public Schools is inviting parents and others to participate in a review of proposed curriculum resources for foreign languages in grades 6-12. The school system holds an extensive review before adopting resources for classroom use and includes parents and other interested county residents in addition to teachers and administrators. This review, covering textbooks, digital resources and associated teacher resources, runs until Friday, Nov.21.
• Yasamine Mohajer was selected as Alpharetta High School's "Rotary Student of the Quarter" for the first quarter of the 2014-2015 school year for her leadership qualities, commitment to educational excellence, and service to the community. This award is sponsored by the Alpharetta Rotary Club, and Yasamine was honored at a special breakfast. She was asked to select the Teacher of the Quarter, and Yasamine chose Lisa Stroligo. Stroligo was also honored at the breakfast.
• The Johns Creek High School marching band and color guard were the silver division sweepstakes grand champions in the Golden River Marching Festival last month in Tallapoosa, Ga. The Gladiators performed their show "Dante's Journey" in competition against several bands throughout Georgia and brought home Class AAA awards including first place for band, color guard, and front ensemble; second place, percussion and third place, drum majors. They also won first runner up in the silver division sweepstakes for grand champion color guard. The band director is Al Estep, and Marcia Laird is associate director. Color guard director is Alyssa Dickens. Percussion instructors are Will Kester and Morgan Crews. Student leaders include: drum major Jackson Bowers; assistant drum major Joey Park; band captains Akash Hegde and Patrick Shinn; brass captain Akhil Upad; woodwind captain Bennett Farina; percussion captains Caitlin Strong and Will Hensley; color guard captains Ashley Hunter, Paige Innes, Jordan Moran and Anna Park; uniform officer Sami Gold; and operations officers Megan Sussman, Sean Kim, Sam Ward and AJ Hutcherson.
