Atlanta Public Schools has promoted its executive director of special education to an assistant superintendent position.

Katika Lovett will become the assistant superintendent of student services on July 1.

She takes over the post from Tammie Workman, who will resign June 30.

Workman came to APS after working with Superintendent Meria Carstarphen in the Austin, Texas school district. Carstarphen credited her with building the Atlanta district’s social and emotional learning initiative, which aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to set goals, create positive relationships and make good decisions.

“Under her leadership we had a strong champion for whole-child development which included providing more wraparound services than we have ever had for students, improving their academic, social-emotional and mental and physical health both inside and outside of school,” Carstarphen said, during Monday’s school board meeting.

The board approved Lovett’s appointment at Monday’s meeting.

Lovett has a doctorate in education from Georgia State University. In 2012, she became the district’s special education coordinator and several years later became the executive director, according to school board documents.

The associate superintendent position oversees special education, student discipline and student health services, among other responsibilities.
