The Atlanta school board unanimously approved a one-year extension to Superintendent Meria Carstarphen's contract Tuesday evening.

“Over the past year, Dr. Carstarphen has not only met our expectations but exceeded our expectations,” board chairman Courtney English said.

Carstarphen became Atlanta Public Schools superintendent last year under a three-year contract that included $399,000 in annual salary and expense allowances as well as benefits such as retirement contributions.

The agreement extends her contract until June 30, 2018.
