A Maryland man was detained by Johns Creek firefighters Friday afternoon after crashing his car and trying to carjack at least two other drivers, police said.

The incident started about 2 p.m. when 28-year-old David Rivas caused a three-vehicle wreck on Old Alabama Road near Haynes Bridge Road, Johns Creek police spokesman Capt. Todd Hood told AJC.com.

Following the crash, he ran from his car and tried to carjack a woman near Newtown Park after shattering her window, Hood said. He then tried to steal a second vehicle near the fire department outside the park, according to police.

Several firefighters witnessed the attempted carjacking and held Rivas down until officers arrived. Two firefighters and the suspect suffered minor injuries in the scuffle, according to police.

“I saw him coming towards me and I locked my door," one woman told officers in body camera footage obtained by Channel 2 Action News. “He started shaking the door and trying to get it open.”

Rivas was taken to the hospital and later booked into the Fulton County Jail. According to police, he ran from the crash because he was driving on an expired tag and didn’t have car insurance.

“As far as I know, the vehicle he was in was registered to him,” Hood said. “So it’s not like he was fleeing from a stolen vehicle or anything like that."

Rivas is charged with hit-and-run, felony obstruction of a firefighter, criminal attempt to commit robbery, criminal attempt to commit a felony, driving without insurance, driving with an expired tag and following too closely. He was released on bond Sunday, jail records show.
