The CBS interview with Harry and Meghan produced many never-before-heard experiences of the royal couple. One account of how Tyler Perry came to their rescue upon their arrival to America last year has captured the attention of several of the millions who watched the interview Sunday.
In their interview with stalwart journalist Oprah Winfrey, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed some scathing facts about their time living among Harry’s family, which includes Queen Elizabeth II and Prince William. Meghan spoke about how the British tabloids, colorism and racism among the royal family led her to have suicidal thoughts.
To find reprieve, the couple, along with their infant son Archie, decided to hurriedly move to the United States last year, which was not approved by the royal family. This news came within weeks of reports that the couple would be “stepping back” from their roles as senior royals. As a part of that removal of titles, they would both lose the benefit of having security detail to follow them, which is standard for the royals.
This was also during the thick of the pandemic, so Harry said during the interview that he was concerned about his family’s safety.
“So suddenly it dawned on me, ‘Hang on, the borders could be closed, we’re going to have our security removed, who knows how long lockdown is going to be, the world knows where we are, it’s not safe, it’s not secure, we probably need to get out of here,’” Harry said.
Meghan admitted in the interview that they “didn’t have a plan,” but a friend of theirs was willing to help. The friend connected them with Tyler Perry, who has homes and runs the main part of his businesses in Atlanta. Perry offered them a temporary stay at one of his Southern California homes. The couple stayed there for three months. In addition to housing, Perry also gave the couple full security detail.
Meghan said that support “gave us breathing room to try to figure out what we were going to do.”
Perry has come to the rescue for everyday people, offering to pay for the homes of those in need and layaway for low-income families. He has also become known as a resourceful celebrity friend, providing housing at one of his mansions to a troubled celebrity pastor, Carl Lentz, last year. His record of philanthropic support and aiding celebrity friends speaks for itself. Still, the revelation of yet another good deed from the billionaire film and television mogul left many Twitter users in awe late Sunday and Monday.
Some could not resist the chance to imagine that Perry’s act of kindness could become a piece of satire or future plot for one of his movies, which often follow a Black woman being rescued from a distressing situation.
