A suspect, allegedly involved in a 104-mph police chase in Orangeburg County, was killed and another suspect has been arrested after the pursuit Friday morning.

Sheriff Duane Lewis told WRDW that the pursuit began  when troopers tried to stop a vehicle going about 104 mph on Interstate 95. The pursuit continued onto Interstate 26 toward Charleston, where Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office began assisting troopers on the chase. The chase ended at a rest area near the College Park Road exit in the Ladson area.

At some point in the chase, gunfire was exchanged, Lewis told the media. At the rest area, shots were fired among sheriff’s deputies, state troopers and the people in the vehicle, resulting in one suspect’s death. Another occupant in the car is in custody.

There was no further detail on the suspects.

Sheriff Duane Lewis said two Berkeley County deputies are on administrative leave with pay while the investigation is being conducted. South Carolina Highway Patrol Col. Christopher Williamson said some troopers have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, as is standard procedure when shots are fired, will be investigating the incident.
