Get out the umbrellas. Actually, you might want to invest in a pair of galoshes, as a major storm front is heading into the South and East.

A developing low-pressure system is expected to bring heavy rain, flash flooding and severe weather throughout the regions Friday and heading into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes are forecast across parts of the South. Heavy rain and flooding are possible from the Plains to the Mississippi and Ohio valleys. Snow and ice will lead to dangerous travel from the Plains to New England.

Flash flooding can be expected in many parts of the South.

Light snow and freezing rain are possible for portions of the Plains, Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes regions, with colder-than-average temperatures for the West Coast stretching into the Northern Plains and warmer-than-average temperatures in the South and East.
