The former mayor of Perry died Tuesday night after being thrown from his motorcycle on State Route 96 in Twiggs County, according to several reports.

Jimmy Faircloth, who served as mayor of Perry for more than nine years, was traveling eastbound about 4 p.m. when traffic in front of him abruptly slowed near mile marker 1, causing him to hit the brakes and lose control of his bike, 13WMAZ reported, citing the Georgia State Patrol.

Faircloth was airlifted to Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center in Macon, where he died from his injuries, according to the station.

His age was not given.

Twiggs County Coroner Harold Reece confirmed the identity of the motorcyclist as Faircloth, reports said.

Faircloth resigned from office in May 2019 with more than 2 years remaining in his term, citing personal reasons and a desire to focus on his full-time job at Central Georgia Technical College, WGXA reports.

He is remembered as a strong leader in the central Georgia community, Perry’s communications manager, Ellen Palmer, told 13WMAZ.

Perry is located south of Macon and west of Warner Robins.
