Two people died and a third was seriously injured after a knife attack led to a police shooting Wednesday morning at a Chamblee apartment complex, officials said.
The shooting happened just after 6:30 a.m. when officers responded to a domestic violence call in the 3200 block of Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Chamblee city spokeswoman Mercy Montgomery said. According to the GBI, Chamblee officers arrived at the Chamblee Heights apartments and witnessed 40-year-old Irlin Paz attacking a woman with a knife.
“Officers immediately intervened to stop the attack and at least one officer discharged his firearm, striking Paz,” GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said Wednesday afternoon. “Both Paz and the woman died at the scene.”
A third man was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital with multiple stab wounds, authorities said. Investigators believe he was injured while trying to stop Paz from attacking the woman. Police have not released the name of the woman killed or said how the three people knew each other.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the GBI, and Chamblee police are investigating the initial 911 call and double stabbing, officials said. Once the GBI’s investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office, Miles said.
Wednesday’s incident marked the 72nd police shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate since the start of the year and the third since Friday. Of those, 41 have been fatal, records show.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
