Metro Atlanta is off to a soggy start Friday morning, and the chance of showers is only expected to increase throughout the day.
While much of that moisture will stick around through the weekend, Saturday and Sunday aren’t expected to be complete washouts, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
This afternoon’s temperature should peak at just 84 degrees in Atlanta thanks to heavy cloud cover and a 70% chance of storms.
“Some heavier downpours out there to start the day,” Monahan said, adding that the rain is heaviest along the I-85 corridor northeast of metro Atlanta. “It’s going to stay that way throughout the day, so leave the house with the umbrella and make sure you have a rain jacket. There are going to be downpours and storms all the way through the afternoon.”
Evening storms caused heavy delays on metro Atlanta’s interstates Thursday, and Monahan expects more of the same for tonight’s commute home.
While much of the rain will linger through Saturday, the second half of the weekend is looking slightly better, he said. The chance of showers drops to 40% on Sunday, though Atlanta residents can expect isolated showers for the next several days.
“I promise you the second half of the weekend is going to look a lot better than the first,” Monahan said.

As for traffic, Friday morning’s rain has led to a series of crashes on metro Atlanta’s interstates.
An overturned vehicle on I-85 North had all lanes blocked just past 17th Street, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. The crash is now on the left shoulder, but delays remain.
And on the inner loop, a crash at a Ponce de Leon Avenue is causing delays in the southbound lanes of I-285.
Drivers are urged to take the Downtown Connector, Clairmont Road or North Hairston Road to avoid the backups, according to the Traffic Center.
