Seven Democratic congressional representatives — four of them from the key Democratic states of California and New York — were named as prosecutors in President Donald Trump’s pending impeachment trial.

After weeks of delay, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stressed Wednesday morning the team was chosen with an "emphasis ... on litigators."

U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, who initiated the impeachment inquiry as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, is lead prosecutor. Schiff, a 59-year-old California Democrat, is in his 10th term in Congress. His current 28th Congressional District includes much of Los Angeles, including Hollywood.

Schiff was first elected to Congress in 2001, and his constituency has undergone several redistrictings.

Another Democrat who came to prominence during the impeachment hearings is U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York congressman who is chair of the House Judiciary Committee. Nadler’s committee approved and then voted on Trump’s actual impeachment articles in a series of nationally televised hearings and votes.

Nadler, 72, is in his 15th term and now represents New York City including Brooklyn, the Upper East Side and Morningside Heights.

U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California is another member of the House Judiciary Committee and was seen prominently on national TV. Lofgren, 72, is from San Mateo, California, and represents San Mateo and Santa Clara County.

Lofgren is an impeachment veteran, having served as a House Judiciary staffer during the investigation into President Richard Nixon and as a committee member during President Bill Clinton’s 1998-99 impeachment.

U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York chairs the House Democratic caucus. Jeffries, 49, also represents Brooklyn, Queens and other parts of New York City; he has been in Congress since 2013.

The remaining three impeachment managers include U.S. Rep. Val Demings of Florida; U.S. Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado, and U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia of Texas.

Demings, 62, has been in Congress since 2017, representing the Sunshine State’s 10th District, which includes Orlando. Demings is a retired law enforcement officer who served as chief of the Orlando Police Department, the first woman to hold the position.

Crow is a 40-year-old former U.S. Army Ranger who now represents the Denver suburban area. He is a rookie congressman who was sworn into his first term in January 2019.

Garcia, 69, now represents Texas’ 29th District, which covers much of east Houston. Like Crow, she is serving her first term in Congress, and became, along with Veronica Escobar, the first Latino women to be elected to Congress from the Lone Star State.
