A former Cobb County schools’ bus driver is scheduled to appear in court in April to answer charges of DUI while transporting 23 elementary school children.

James Douglas Gurr, 67, of Marietta, was arrested Feb. 4 and cited for following too closely, DUI and endangering a child by DUI, in connection with a collision before 7:30 a.m. that morning.

Gurr could not be reached Wednesday and it was not clear if he had hired an attorney. He is scheduled to appear in Cobb State Court April 11, according to court documents.

Gurr resigned from Cobb schools in lieu of termination on Feb. 6, according to district spokesman Jay Dillon.

According to the arrest citation, Gurr was driving the bus along Holly Springs Road and rear-ended a vehicle that was stopped at a traffic signal at Sewell Mill Road. The citation indicates Gurr was “flushed and had a slight odor of alcoholic beverage about his person.”

Gurr was given a breath test at the scene and the results were higher than .08, the legal limit, but the citation doesn’t indicate how much higher.

Gurr was released from the Cobb County jail, the same day he was arrested, on a $2,300 bond.
