A nationally-known central Georgia hot dog stand was heavily damaged early Friday when flames ripped through a 120-year-old building in downtown Macon.

The three-alarm blaze broke out about 3 a.m. at Nu-Way Weiners on Cotton Avenue, according to the Macon Telegraph.

The fire burned through the roof of the restaurant, which two weeks ago celebrated 99 years in business, and the building was gutted.

The restaurant’s owners told the newspaper that eight other Nu-Way locations in middle Georgia would remain open while they rebuild the regional chain’s flagship location.

The restaurant's iconic neon sign, which, according to the restaurant's website, has intentionally misspelled "wiener" since 1937, was saved from the flames.

The restaurant was featured in a 2007 episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” as well as in the 1999 PBS special, “A Hot Dog Program.”
