After roughly 18 months of planning and construction, Dunwoody’s newest park is open to the public.

City leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday to mark the completion of the first phase of construction of Waterford Park. The new park features two newly refurbished tennis courts, a pavilion, new sidewalks, parking, fencing, lights and railings.

The north DeKalb County city purchased the land, located at 4565 Dellrose Drive, from the Waterford Swim and Racquet Club in December 2019. Nancy Jester, who was the county commissioner for the area at the time, used $125,000 of bond funds to purchase the property.

Danica Henry, a board member for the Waterford Neighborhood Association, said in a news release that the organization could not maintain its pool and decided a park would be a better use for the property.

“When we could not save our pool, we wanted to have a safe place for families to continue to get together,” Henry said. “Neighbors have always taken walks on the property, so we were also interested in walking paths and a way to connect neighborhoods.”

The city replaced the pool with a sod meadow and added the other amenities. It is one of 13 properties that the city’s parks and recreation department manages, totaling more than 180 acres. Dunwoody recently purchased nine acres of greenspace along Vermack Road to create a new park.
